Open Cooling Systems | PTE

This axial countercurrent cooling tower operates according to the induced draft principle and has a performance range of 10 – 140 l/s with a maximum water inlet temperature of 55°C (standard packing) to 65°C (alternative packing). The water is distributed under pressure.

Operating principle

From the heat source, hot process water (1) at the top of the cooling tower passes into the spray system (2), where it is distributed over the packing or heat transfer medium (3). At the same time, the axial fan (4) located at the top of the unit blows air from the sides of the unit (5) over the packing. Combined air inlet protection elements (6) protect the tower from foreign bodies being sucked into the unit. When the hot process water meets the cold air, the latter is heated and part of the process water evaporates, removing heat from the rest of the water. The trough (7) or inclined basin collects the cooled water, which then returns to the heat source of the process (8). The warm saturated air (9) first passes the droplet separators (10), which remove the water droplets from the air, and then leaves the tower at the top.

Typical applications are:

  • Small to large commercial applications
  • wastewater applications
  • Replacement of towers erected on site with basin-less devices

Main advantages of the PTE

  • Low energy consumption
  • Low noise
  • Easy to maintain

Main advantages in detail

Evaporative coolers enable energy to be saved system-wide at low operating temperatures. Axial fans require only half the energy of similar fan units. Versapak fillers provide maximum air/water contact time with minimal air pressure loss. Highly efficient fan motors further reduce energy consumption.

The PTE is equipped with low-noise axial fans. A further reduction of the noise level is possible with whisper-quiet fans as well as with a specially developed and precisely dimensioned sound attenuation at the air inlet. With water silencers, the noise level of cross-flow towers can almost be reached. These water silencers are always supplied with whisper-quiet fans.

The open PTE cooling tower is easier to maintain than other countercurrent cooling towers using the induced draft principle. With the BranchLok water distribution system, each arm can be removed for easy cleaning. The combined air inlet protection elements can be removed without tools. This allows full access to the cold water pool. An optional cleaning opening facilitates the removal of sludge from the cooling tower basin. The tower pack modules have optional handles and removable sidewalls for better and easier tower pack inspection and replacement. The motor adjustment elements are easily accessible from the outside and have an integrated spanner for easy motor alignment and belt tensioning. The fans are easily accessible via a sliding door. A further relief are the anti-turbulence structures with removable suction strainer.

The leak-free InterLok system enables quick assembly of the PTE tower on site. The basin in the upper part can be installed without a sealing tape in between. The compact PTE footprint is perfect for enclosed spaces. Container delivery is often possible.

Due to the simple cleaning and inspection of the PTE towers, hygiene risks due to bacteria (e.g. Legionella) or biofilm inside are significantly reduced. Dirt and foreign bodies are constantly flushed out by the inclined position of the filling material and the slope of the cold water basin, so that they practically clean themselves. In addition, Eurovent-certified, highly efficient droplet separators are integrated in the packing. Combined air inlet-protection elements block sunlight and prevent biological growth in the tower, filter the air and ensure that no water splashes out. An optional tub suction system prevents the accumulation of sediments in the cold water basin.
